Q. Can I plant my Christmas tree in the garden after Christmas?
A. In fairness, the answer is no. The Nordman Fir, which is the best type of Christmas tree for needle retention has one major disadvatage, it does not like being moved. Fir trees tend to send out a long tap root, which is a single root which grows from the centre of the root system. The trouble is, if you cut or break this root, the tree does not like it. Spruce trees on the other hand, such as the Norway Spruce, the tradtional Christmas tree have a much more fibrous root system, and as a result take more kindly to being transplanted. The trouble is, they are not very good at holding their needles, so we do not use them for the internet sales. That's nature I'm afraid.
